Largely self taught, the years at Yale were crucial for him as was exposed to formal art training classes and helped expand his knowledge of the history of art.

After graduating from Yale, Senanayake immersed himself in painting. His years of training at Yale had helped develop a mode of expression which had matured greatly. He also began to delve deeper into the various environmental issues concerning Sri Lanka. Of particular interest were the rain forests and wildlife which are recurring themes in his work.
